Two new green walls in the Fremantle CBD

The Fremantle Green Skins Project, which was initiated by the City of Fremantle in collaboration with Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute (CUSP), is a trial to measure and evaluate the feasibility of installing vertical green living walls within the Fremantle city area. Students from The University of Western Australia and Murdoch University have also been involved in the project.

Rigorous monitoring will assess the multiple scientific and social benefits that green wall structures can provide, while also investigating plant species that are suitable for green walls in hot, arid, windy climates such as Fremantle.

I hope this project is not only going to make Fremantle a greener more beautiful place, it is also going to contribute to important sustainability debates about how we green our streets and bring ecology back into our city centres. This is especially important and challenging in a warming and drying climate like Perth’s

Two locations have been chosen for the trials and include a north facing wall at the Westgate Mall and a west facing wall on Cantonment Street. Both walls are part of the same building which is currently leased by Target.

Upon completion of the year long trial, data will be analysed to assess the opportunities and barriers for future application of green walls and rooftop gardens in Fremantle.

Construction of the green walls has commenced and will be completed ahead of the official opening of the project on 12 April 2013.

  1. Love what this project is and stands for. Have an existing site in Fremantle, with opportunities for trial and implementation of green walls and roof top gardens….

This will be very exciting to see how the walls develop over the course of the year. I hope that these vertical green walls spring up in more areas of Fremantle, and in other local cities aswell. It’s much needed.

Off to have a look today. Heard about it on the radio and very interested to see it in person
