Fremantle Arts Centre is turning 40…

It is amazing to think that the Fremantle Arts Centre is turning 40.

Since the former Lunatic Asylum  was famously saved from bulldozers in the 1960s (see photo below), this building has come to embody so much of what there is to love about Fremantle – our heritage, the arts, music and a great place were community gathers.

To celebrate FAC is putting on Mad About You a big-hearted, public-led exhibition that celebrates Fremantle Arts Centre’s role as a creative and community hub and reflects on the influence it has played in many people’s lives.

While Mad About You includes work from the City’s Art Collection and other well known artists, it also features the works and memories of the general public and FAC’s broad, enthusiastic community of visitors and students. By bringing together material as diverse as You Tube gig footage, the recollections of well-known Fremantle residents and new works by local school students, the exhibition is intended to be forward-looking and multi-faceted.

The project will also extend online through a blog where FAC-lovers are encouraged to post pictures, video and recollections of their fondest memories of FAC right throughout the exhibition. Check out

Mad About You will be launched in the Inner Courtyard at 6.30pm on 12 April, with a gala party featuring Fremantle musicians, the Zydecats and members of the Fremantle Arts Centre community past and present.

Mad About You runs until 2 June.
