EVERYTHING YOU EVER NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT MYRE FREO

MYRE: SPACEMARKET TAKE OVER OLD MYER IN FREMANTLE

• Spacemarket hold the lease for 20,000m2, 5 floors (basement, ground, 1f, 2f, roof)

• Spacemarket are seeking Expressions of Interest from enterprises for the ground floor, retail and

first floor production spaces

• “Probably Australia’s largest pop-up shop”

• Expressions of Interest close Aug 20(ground floor) and Aug 26(production floor)

Spacemarket currently hold the lease on the Old MYER in Kings Square, Fremantle (cnr

Newman Court and Queen St). Working with the City of Fremantle, we are looking to create

a place of unique retail, production and public activity, a destination unto itself.

Spacemarket is seeking applications from individuals, groups, franchises and businesses with

skills and experience in areas such as product launches, community engagement, innovative

customer experience, arts, culture, tourism, making, or any thing large or small that’s on the

edge. We welcome your pitch.

We see this exercise as one of ‘strangemaking’ – tweaking the familiar. We have named this

project MYRE. We are playing into the place and name recognition while also invoking

entanglement sense of amalgamation and mingling of functions. A good thing, we think.

On the ground level, the Shop Floor, we are offering 30 spaces of approximately 100m² each.

We want to summon an old-world retail ideology; looking back to the genesis of the

department store – great products and great retailers working together as a co-operative –

under one roof.

Our intention is to create a rich environment to explore new modes of retail. We believe that

old retail – in the sense of a purely transactional environment – is dead. Applicants may be

wishing to test out a new business model, launch a product line, create a new brand identity,

or branch out from an established base. Here is a chance to try something fresh and be

supported in your endeavour.

The first level, the Production Floor, will house the making, manufacturing and industry

facilities of the MYRE building. We are looking at this space as the fabrication area of the

project. This floor is open to interpretation and welcomes all disciplines. Tell us what you

want to make, what you need to make it and what you plan to do with it.

The Rooftop will be transformed into a Bar, Café, Gym, Sports, Festival and Events venue

with the aim of being a tourism and community magnet through a carefully constructed

event program.

We will actively encourage ingenuity and enterprise. This will not be a flea-market or a

weekend craft fair. This will be a place of curated, supportive, complimentary and quality

operators.

Myre has been referred to as “Australia’s biggest pop-up shop”, and, while we espouse the

breadth and ambition of this statement, we believe we are doing much more. Indeed our

inhabitation of Myre is subject to the burgeoning redevelopment of the building and our

tenure there is temporary, but in that time we will be creating a world within a world. While

most pop-up programmes camp in their shells and bear little reference to the space they

inhabit, the Myre project will embrace, extrapolate and push the boundaries of the building’s

initial use, meditating on the intent, nature and fantasy of what a department store meant in

its conception and what it is to occupy the shell of such a behemoth in a contemporary urban

context.

We are constructing an environment for businesses to ground, grow and graduate from

MYRE to outside of the space, into Fremantle and greater Perth, generating a comprehensive

fine-grain shift in the occupation, activity, vitality, experiencing and understanding of our

cities (see post- architecture talking about just this).

Expressions of Interest for the Shopfloor close on Aug 20, 2013. The interest period will run a

little longer on the production floor, closing on August 26, 2013.
