Launch of Journey to Recognition and Grand Opening of Fremantle Aboriginal Cultural Centre

This Monday (March 10), Fremantle will come together to recognise the unique contribution Aboriginal people make to our local community and to our country.

A very special event will be held to open the Fremantle Aboriginal Cultural Centre and to launch the next leg of Australia’s Journey to Recognition – an epic relay across the country, building community support to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the Constitution.

Before they reach our great city, Recognise campaigners will have travelled more than 15,000 kilometres, covering almost every corner of Australia.

At each town along the way, momentum has been building towards a referendum where all Australians will get the chance to recognise our true history and finally remove racial discrimination from our founding document.

Aboriginal people and culture are not only an important part of our nation’s story but also to Fremantle’s story.

An Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Fremantle has long been a dream of aboriginal people in and around Fremantle and it is very exciting to see this finally come to fruition.

Thanks to all the local aboriginal people who came to the many working group meetings with City of Fremantle staff and councillors on this and for helping us take one more step in the journey of recognition and reconciliation.

I urge you all to sign up at www.recognise.org.au and to join the local Aboriginal community on Monday morning as Freo gets behind this historic journey.
