Atwell unveiled

What is old is new again. Good to see the Atwell Buildings brought back to their former glory. Well done to Gerard O’Brien and Silverleaf for this great rennovation.

Looks really good, if historically inaccurate. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but the original tuck-pointing was black (as described in my Herald article some time back). That could be seen when the paint was first cleaned off, but it seems the decision was made to finish in conventional while.

I wish and hope that we all watch the ABC Restoring Australia on Tuesday nights at 8.30
The restorers are enthusiasts and the mantra is if you do it do it right.
A must see for all true believers and others.

Its a little lost in these parts of short cuts and profits.

Further, I did hold back a little (while misspelling ‘white’). Quoting from my Herald article of 5 July 2014, which in turn quotes from newspaper reports of the time, “the cement work coloured in imitation of rich tinted sandstone (etc).” I had hoped someone connected with the project might read what I quoted and take the hint, the story was directed at them. A forlone hope. So, not only the pointing but the cement work is wrong. The original effect would not work now anyway, given the pointing is white. Nonetheless, an attempt has been made and that should be acknowledged.
