Synagogue development approved by Council

The other big decision made at the Fremantle Council planning committee this week was the approval of a three storey additions and alterations to existing Synagogue building at No.92 South Terrace, Fremantle, subject to conditions.
This has been a very long process (15 years according to the rather relieved owner) to get this resolved so it will good to see that building used fully again as it is an important and iconic entry point to central Fremantle.
The City of Fremantle’s Heritage Department reviewed the proposed development and made the following recommendations:
The additions, alteration and new works proposed for the Synagogue and the Beer’s Buildings are considered to be generally acceptable and are recommended for support subject to the following conditions:
1) The proposed new rear extension building is considered to be generally acceptable in terms of its siting, bulk, form, scale, colour, texture and materials.
2) That the owner of the building collaborates with the Design Advisory Committee on the more detailed aspects of the scheme to achieve a general simplification of the design.

What’s the condition of the inside of the synagogue? I grew up in and around another very old congregation in Hobart so I’ve always been curious as to the fremantle temple. I’m glad it’s finally going to be used for something, and hopefully it’s done respectfully.
They have done a lot of work on it. Some of the floor levels have been altered but the rest restored.
