Hilton Primary School is Waste Wise School of the year

Hilton Primary School has won the Waste Wise School of the year at the Waste Authority’s prestigious Infinity Awards held last Friday night.

Students at Hilton Primary School have learnt about Plastic Free July, made a worm farm, do regular Rubbish Rangers litter collection, recycle batteries, toothbrushes and mobile phones and run waste free lunches each Tuesday.

But it hasn’t stopped there. Hilton Primary School kids are side by side with the grown-ups at market stalls showing people how to make their own beeswax sandwich wraps – no more glad wrap!  Students also work with community members at Hilton Harvest Community Garden every Wednesday for Buds n Blooms Intergenerational gardening.

Principal, Julie Harrison said ‘the beauty of having such a small school is that, as well as providing excellent pastoral care where everyone knows everyone else, all students can be involved in one way or another in these special projects. For example we recently had Junkadelic run workshops for all the students to make recycled instruments and costumes, then (almost) the whole school went in the Freo parade to celebrate!’

Hilton Primary School intends to keep on this path. Starting next year the school will remove juice boxes from the lunch order menu to reduce waste and increase health!
