Sydney and Freo in step over climate action

It was great to see the unanimous and bipartisan support at the City of Sydney last night as their Council agreed to divest from fuels.

Sydney, like the City of Fremantle, will now preference sustainable financial institutions and include coal, gas and oil on its list of “environmentally harmful activities”

This is important as in 2015 the big four banks – Westpac, ANZ, NAB and the Commonwealth Bank – pumped $5.5bn into the fossil fuel sector.

Interestingly the City of Sydney was the first carbon neutral local Government in Australia and City of Fremantle was the second. In the case of divestment however, the City of Fremantle was we are happy to have that order flipped and other councils like East Fremantle also taking a similar path.

Well done to everyone involved including the members of 350.org who have been driving for this over the last few years.

It is becoming very clear that coal is rapidly becoming the Kodak of the energy world.

Update 8.9.16 The City of Vincent just agreed to this too 🙂

  1. Interesting that a Port City like Freo that has survived on the use of Coal ,gas and oil now regards them as harmful activities. I wonder when we will see all ships using the port not relying on these fuels as they have done for hundreds of years and perhaps they could all change to nuclear power? oh that’s right ,Freo has banned the use of that as well. Back to wind power then I suppose and ship ahoy.
