This morning was the announcement Fremantle has been waiting for.
Premier Colin Barnett and Finance Minister Sean L’Strange came to Fremantle’s Kings Square to announce that more than 1,500 state government workers from Housing, Corrective Servies and Transport will be relocated to Kings Square by 2020.
The announcement secures the long-awaited commercial anchor tenant required to trigger construction of the $220m Kings Square project, the single largest community project ever delivered by a Fremantle Council and one of the largest developments in Fremantle’s history.
Once completed the project will generate more than 2,100 ongoing local jobs which will provide a massive boost to the vibrancy of the city centre and inject an extra $358m into the local economy.
I want to give a special, personal note of thanks to the Premier who through changes of ministers and changes in economic conditions stayed true his government’s word to relocate a State Government department to Fremantle and saw this major investment in Fremantle across the line.
This is a catalyst project and will provide a much needed boost to the local economy and will trigger construction on one of the most important developments in our city’s long history. I am looking forward to getting on with delivering what will become a fantastic community and cultural precinct in the heart of Fremantle.
The coordinated development of multiple sites in and around Fremantle’s Kings Square is set to deliver:
- a revamped city square complete with grassed areas, public art and new street furniture
- a major new children’s playground
- high-quality retail, commercial and hospitality spaces
- a new state-of-the-art library and visitor centre
- new City administration building with purpose built indoor and outdoor community spaces and meeting rooms
- end of trip bike facilities
- fully accessible toilets with baby change facilities
- new lighting and CCTV.
This project will deliver a once-in-a-generation investment into the future of Fremantle and would usher in a new phase of growth in the port city.
The Kings Square project is a key part of the $1.4b development pipeline in Fremantle that will see the port city transformed into a more vibrant and liveable city with more residents, workers and visitors.
Construction will begin in mid-2017 with project completion estimated by the end of 2019.
